The New American Empire and the Electronic Revolution

Version 1.0
FINAL MARK: 80%
Winner of the Lancashire Telegraph Award For Dissertation Excellence 2007

This project is the result of research that was conducted for my final dissertation as part of my B.A. in English Language and Literary Studies. I graduated in July 2007 with 1st class honours.

ABSTRACT:

PNAC, or The Project for the New American Century was a Washington ‘think-tank’ established in 1997. They proposed supreme military dominance in order to maintain America’s position as the only global superpower. We have subsequently seen the effect of their proposals in the alleged ‘War on Terror’ and the illegal invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

This investigation concentrates on the group’s most infamous document called ‘Rebuilding America’s Defences‘ and the response it received on the internet. This is approached from the perspective of critical linguistics combined with social and cultural theory.

The text is designed to be read sequentially, like a traditional book, although each part can still be read independently. Please also feel free to comment and criticise.

EXTENDED VERSION

The final project was heavily restricted due to the final word count and the need to stay within the barriers of the subject area. Considerable work has been undertaken since the publication of the original and the final version (if anything’s ever final) will be made freely available as soon as possible.

Stage One: Additional research – 60% complete
Stage Two: Draft – 20% complete
